Carney hints at tax cuts, changes to criminal code ahead of Parliament's return

Prime Minister Mark Carney is hinting at a busy few weeks as Canada's Parliament is returning for the first time since early January.

He spoke on Sunday at the Liberal caucus meeting, sharing details of what King Charles III will present during Tuesday's Throne Speech and legislation that'll be brought forward soon after.

"We're going to be very, very busy in the next few weeks," said Carney.

His speech touched on several issues, with a big emphasis on community safety.

"We're going to legislate to toughen the criminal code for those who are threatening the safety of Canadians by making bail harder to get for those charged with stealing cars, with home invasions, with drug smuggling, and with human trafficking," Carney added.

He also noted he plans to keep his promises to cut the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for first-time homebuyers and to cut taxes for the middle class.

"Canadians want their lives to be more affordable, they want their communities to be safer. We will deliver these mandates with urgency and determination," said Carney.

While he didn't go into details, Carney also mentioned they'll be introducing legislation that focuses on new infrastructure projects.
